La Mujer Obrera is a local independent organization dedicated to creating communities defined by women. Our organization was founded in 1981 by women who were both garment workers and Chicana activists. Our experience showed us that as women we must implement our own ideas and strategies for our community. La Mujer Obrera has developed its organizing strategies based on the following basic human rights: employment, housing, education, nutrition, health, peace, and political liberty. Over the years, La Mujer Obrera has been one of the leaders in the struggle against an “undeclared war” on marginalized women workers of Mexican heritage.
 

Today La Mujer Obrera continues to challenge the perception that women are an infinite source of cheap labor and that progress means we are the ones who must sacrifice. We must see ourselves as being at the forefront of defining progress within our community. The struggle of women in the factories and resistance to NAFTA has strengthened us to create community. Our collective practice includes: cooking, raising our children, working the land, commerce, artisanry, and cultural celebrations. We need these practices to safeguard our ancestral knowledge and apply it to the present. This is our contribution as women workers in El Paso to the struggle for work, dignity, and justice. The space we are creating belongs to future generations of women and their families. 

The mission of the New Mexico Dental Association Foundation is to inspire benevolent dental outreach and to promote dental health in New Mexico.

Founded in 2005 as the charitable affiliate of the New Mexico Dental Association, the New Mexico Dental Association Foundation is a place where the big heart of dentistry is on display every day. Coordinator of donated dental services for hundreds of disabled or elderly New Mexicans who cannot afford dental care, administrator of the yearly Mission of Mercy event that serves anyone who chooses to receive treatment at a 2 day dental clinic, custodian of relief funds for dentists who have practice threatening situations, and big thinker about the future of dentistry and dental care in New Mexico, the Foundation is an important new player on the public health scene in our state.

The year-round outreach project of the New Mexico Dental Association Foundation is the Donated Dental Services program. One hundred and eighty New Mexican dentists from all parts of the state and ninety three dental laboratories have volunteered to provide services on a pro bono basis to the elderly and disabled who cannot afford dental care. The Donated Dental Services program provides once-in-a-lifetime, major dental work. While virtually every dentist quietly and on a daily basis fills cavities and other minor services without pay, the Donated Dental Services program does the kind of expensive, long term work that would be far beyond the wildest dreams of the patients involved. Implants, full and partial dentures, and other restorative work can dramatically change patient’s lives and general health. Participating dentists generally undertake one to two patients in the program each year, and contribute an average of $3200 per case

Imagine one hundred dental chairs being staffed all day long for two days by five hundred dentists, hygienists and assistants from New Mexico and other parts of the country. That’s a lot of dentistry! The New Mexico Dental Association Foundation has now hosted four New Mexico Mission of Mercy events. First organized by the America’s Dentists Care Foundation, the Mission of Mercy program is a massive two day dental clinic where anyone choosing to come for acute dental problems can be treated at no cost. Over 6,900 patients have received dental treatment totaling 4.9 million dollars of care. The care was provided by 7,000 volunteers, both dental professionals and lay volunteers. These events have been the largest charitable outreaches in the history of New Mexico.

Segundo Barrio Futbol Club (SBFC) is located in the neighborhood of the same time on the Southside of El Paso, sandwiched between downtown and the US/Mexico border. The club was formed in 2011. The original plan was to form just one team for the neighborhood children, but due to the overwhelming response, more teams and programs were added over time.

The mission of SBFC, “is to seek to use soccer as a tool for social change by developing programs that foster the physical, mental, and emotional growth and development of boys and girls in El Paso's Segundo Barrio neighborhood and beyond”.

The Segundo Barrio neighborhood is an immigrant community and has been called ‘The Ellis Island of the southern border’. It is one of the most deprived communities in the entire country with very high indices of poverty. Most of the children in Segundo Barrio are considered ‘At Risk’. There is a severe lack of opportunities for youth to participate in organized sports because of economic barriers. There is no charge for children to participate in SBFC’s soccer programs.

Today SBFC serves approximately 150 boys and girls ages 8 to 18 in three main programs. Its Competitive Travel Team program has five teams with about 80 children, from Under 10s to Under 18s that compete year round in local soccer leagues and tournaments. The Soccer and Reading Club is an afterschool program based at two local elementary schools. This recreational program, with 50 children in grades 3 through 5, provides an opportunity to get reading support and play soccer twice a week. Finally, the College Prep program is a way to support local high school soccer players academically and help prepare them for higher education. This program has about 20 participants.

SBFC is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff. The coaches are community members and parents. SBFC covers its expenses through shirt sponsorship, grants, private donations and fundraising events such as its annual Charity Cup game.

University Medical Center Foundation of El Paso is the designated charitable organization for University Medical Center of El Paso, El Paso's only not-for-profit safety net hospital. Since its inception in 2009, the Foundation has provided over $6 million dollars in medical equipment, program support and family care grants to improve patient care and elevate the breadth of services and quality of medicine available to all El Pasoans. 

As the primary academic teaching institution for the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine and Texas Tech Health Science Center, UMC is training the caregivers of tomorrow. With almost 3000 associates, University Medical Center serves as one of El Paso's largest employers and economic drivers.
